Talk by Dr. Ian Drake
In this session we will analyze the history of U.S. interest in Asia, particularly China and Japan, since the mid-19th century. It is no mystery why the U.S. has directed much of its diplomatic (and prospectively its military) energy to the region: the rise of China over the last 30 years and its competition with the U.S. for the preponderance of power in Asia. We will consider the question of the famous "Thucydides trap" and what it may mean for the future of U.S. foreign policy around the globe. Ian J. Drake teaches in the Political Science and Law Department at Montclair State University. He received his Ph.D. in American history from the University of Maryland and his law degree from the University of Richmond. Adults only. Registration required.
