Talk by Dr. Robert Butts

The 1970s were dominated by the ongoing Vietnam War, continued unrest, political scandals, the end of the Vietnam War and the  resignation of a President.  At the same time, there was both a continuation of and a reaction to the music, arts, and cultural movements that had exploded in the 1960s.  Folk music returned to ballads, songs of self-awareness, and affirmation of life in the works of James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, and John Denver. Film scores either featured a return to earlier pop music (American Graffiti, The Sting) and traditional orchestral scores (The Godfather, Jaws).  Broadway musicals included Grease, A Chorus Line, Chicago, and the increased influence of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim.  Country, rock, and pop music artists included Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Carly Simon; and emerging new artists like Elton John, Billy Joel, ABBA, and Neil Diamond.
