Lecture by acclaimed composer and conductor Dr. Bob Butts

The 1960s was one of the most intense decades in history – marked by increased violence, assassinations, social unrest, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Of the arts, music best represented these changes. The popularity of Rock & Roll continued, developing by the end of the decade into Hard Rock, Folk Rock, Rock Fusion,
Pop Rock, Concert Rock, and more. Folk singers/writers like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan performed songs that related to the times. Country music grew to ever greater popularity with the success of Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride, and others. The British Invasion began mid-decade with the influential work of the Beatles. California sounds were represented by The Beach Boys, The Mamas and the Papas, and others. The Broadway Musical continued in the Golden Age style, but reflected the times with shows like Hair. Classical composers broke into two camps – one favoring the extreme modernism and the other seeking a more accessible style that eventually led to minimalism and New Age. Motown Records produced hit songs and artists that competed with the British groups. The decade ended with the legendary Woodstock Festival In 1969. Join Bob for this trip through the sixties.  Adults only.  Registration required.
